THE IOWA RESPONSE

Iowa Council of Foundations members throughout Iowa are responding to the natural disasters that have impacted our communities. Below is a listing of funds established at various foundations to provide support both immediate and long-term support as well as responses made by members of the Iowa Council of Foundations. FLOODING

The Floods of 2008 Assistance Fund was established to provide for on-going, long-term recovery, clean up and support of communities affected by the June 2008 floods in Northeast Iowa.  In addition, funds have been established for each of the affiliate community foundation counties of Allamakee, Clayton and Delaware.  (If there would happen to be unused dollars left in the fund after all the needs from the floods of 2008 have been met, those dollars would be put into the Community Foundation Crisis Fund to be used in other emergency situations occurring in Northeast Iowa as needed.)

Community Foundation of the Great River Bend

FLOODING

2008 Flood Relief and Recovery Fund was established to support the work of nonprofit organizations providing assistance to victims affected by the flood in the Southeast Iowa Region.  The first $10,000 in donations to this fund will be matched with $10,000 from the Community Foundation’s Emergency Relief Fund.  Funds for the county-based community foundation affiliates with the Community Foundation of the Great River Bend have also been established.

Community Foundation of Greater Muscatine

CFGM Flood ’08 Fund was established to support nonprofit organizations that are providing first-response efforts and ongoing recovery and rebuilding throughout Muscatine County.  A matching gift fund has been created by a local family to encourage contributions and will match dollar-for-dollar up to $5,000.

Coralville/Iowa City Area Flood Relief Fund was established to help address needs in the Coralville and Iowa City areas focused on three distinct timeframes of needs: immediate, intermediate and long range.  All of the collaborative efforts will offer assistance to individuals, organizations and agencies in the aforementioned timeframes.

The 2008 Flood Relief & Recovery Fund has been established to provide assistance for nonprofit organizations to support the numerous families impacted by the recent floods.  The Community Foundation and United Way of Central Iowa will form an advisory group to assess needs and recommend distributions from the Fund to community-based organizations in Greater Des Moines providing or needing assistance as a result of the 2008 flood.

Little Sioux Scout Ranch Rebuilding Fund was established to collect contributions to rebuild the Ranch that was destroyed during the EF3 tornado on June 11 that took the lives of 4 boy scouts and injured 48 others.

2008 Iowa Disaster Fund

TORNADOES/ FLOODING 

The 2008 Iowa Disaster Fund was created by Governor Chet Culver and Des Moines and Eastern Iowa business leaders to receive contributions from individuals, businesses and organizations to benefit Iowans who have experienced significant hardship as a result of the storms and floods of 2008.  This fund has been launched with close to $2 million and is held at the Greater Des Moines Community Foundation.

The 2008 Iowa Disaster Fund's purpose is to promote private sector contributions from many of Iowa's premier leaders and businesses, as well as to seek funds outside of Iowa.  The 2008 Iowa Disaster Fund will NOT take the place of contributions to local agencies such as community foundations, United Ways or Red Cross Chapters; rather, the Fund will encourage local contributions and also provide a fund for those wishing to make statewide contributions.

Iowa Credit Union Foundation

The Disaster Fund has been opened for contributions.  An appeal to credit unions across the US for donations to the Iowa fund will be sent out by the National Credit Union Foundation.

United Way & Community Foundation of Northwest Iowa

FLOODING

After the floods of August 2007, a fund was established to help people beyond rescue and relief, and help them recover.  A fund was created with the United Way & Community Foundation of Northwest Iowa.

TORNADOES

Employees have been reminded of the Matching Gifts program and were encouraged to contribute to the Community Foundation of Northeast Iowa for tornado relief in Parkersburg and surrounding communities.

 

FLOODING

Sizeable grants have been awarded in Iowa and Wisconsin for communities affected by recent floods.  (Grants to American Red Cross and Salvation Army in both states.)

Black Hawk County Gaming Association

TORNADOES

The Black Hawk County Gaming Association donated $10,000 to the American Red Cross Tornado Disaster Relief to aid those impacted by the May 25 storms in Northeast Iowa.

Iowa Credit Union Foundation

The Iowa Credit Union Foundation has a Disaster Grant program in place since its beginning in 1995.  The grants are available to credit union members and employees who have been impacted by a natural disaster.

TORNADOES

A grant of $20,000 was awarded to the University of Northern Iowa to conduct “Operation Falcon Pride,” a summer recreation day camp for youth ages 6 through 12 in Parkersburg, IA in an effort to assist children in making a transition to normalcy while families work to rebuild.  The grant provides funding for UNI students' services, as well as employment for some teens in Parkersburg to assist with the camp, and the use of UNI's Wellness Recreation Services and Outdoor Services.

Mid-Iowa Health Foundation

FLOODING

The Mid-Iowa Health Foundation approved a $50,000 grant to the Greater Des Moines Community Foundation’s 2008 Flood Relief & Recovery Fund to be used for mental health services for vulnerable people in greater Des Moines.

Pella Rollscreen Foundation

TORNADOES

Pella Rolscreen has done the following in an effort to respond to the tornado in Parkersburg.

·         A Disaster Relief Intranet site has been established for employees to access information on team members whose families were impacted by the tornado and how they can help these families directly.

·         The Pella Rolscreen Foundation will match all gifts made by team members to the Red Cross for the Parkersburg relief fund through the month of June—no minimum donation has to be made.

·         The Pella Rolscreen Foundation will make a direct grant to a Parkersburg Relief Fund—yet to be determined.

·         A volunteer program for team members wanting to give of their time to help out in Parkersburg has been established.  Working through the Iowa Concern Hotline Pella has offered to send 12-15 person work crews a day at a time for at least 10 days coordinated through Iowa Concerns.  The company will provide employees with a paid day during their volunteer time, safety glasses, work gloves and transportation to and from Parkersburg.

·         The tulip bulbs planted around Pella Corporation’s campus (which are dug annually and sold at the company auction) were donated to the city of Parkersburg as a symbol of faith in the future of Parkersburg

Principal Financial Group Foundation, Inc.

TORNADOES

A significant financial contribution was made to the Community Foundation of Northeast Iowa, to be combined with donations pledged through a special program announced at the Principal Charity Classic.  Donations made by employees, retirees and career agents of the Principal Financial Group® will be matched by the Foundation, up to a total of $25,000.

 

Contributions were also collected as part of The Principal Charity Classic “Birdies for Charity” program. The Community Foundation of Northeast Iowa was added to the list of eligible charities following the disaster. More than $33,000 was raised based on pledges made for each birdie made during the three-day Principal Charity Classic.

 

FLOODING

Principal Financial Group Foundation, Inc. is has established giving options with local community foundations in Des Moines, Cedar Falls, Cedar Rapids, Iowa City and Mason City.  The Principal Financial Group Foundation, Inc. will match employee, retiree and career agent contributions and will be working with the community foundations in terms of distributions. 

The Wellmark Foundation

TORNADOES/ FLOODING

The Wellmark Foundation pledged $1million to the Embrace Iowa 2008 Iowa Disaster Fund, housed and administered by the Greater Des Moines Community Foundation on behalf of statewide disaster recovery and relief from flooding and tornadoes.

 

The contribution was made as an unrestricted gift to allow local communities to determine the area of greatest need.

When the Iowa Council of Foundations is asked by the public, colleagues and other foundations about Iowa's philanthropic response to local disasters, we'd like to share your stories about grantmaking and opportunities about ways to contribute through local foundations. Please share information about the work you are doing related to disasters. As you take action, please email the information to the ICoF; we will use the information to:

  • keep fellow ICoF members updated so that we know what each of us is doing;
  • answer questions about responses to the Iowa disasters; and
  • share with foundations, corporations, and other funders in neighboring Iowa communities as well as outside of the state when they contact ICoF for information on giving options.
