S.T.E.P. Overview
In its second year this fall, (2011) S.T.E.P. (Students Teaching & Empowering Philanthropy) is a program in Marshalltown run by youth for the purpose of nurturing philanthropy in youth, developing leaders and allowing youth to identify new community opportunities or expand on existing ones.
This year-long program, sponsored by the Martha-Ellen Tye Foundation and Community Foundation of Marshall County, empowers and challenges high school students to address, identify and seek solutions to community needs. This program culminates with the students awarding $5,000 from the Youth Philanthropy Fund of the Martha-Ellen Tye Foundation to non-profit agencies in Marshall County.
• S.T.E.P. is a board of 18 high school students (sophomores, juniors and seniors) from Marshalltown High School.
• The Members meet twice a month and participate in every aspect of the grant making process, from writing the application to creating the selection criteria.
• Members actively engage in leadership training, on-site visits to non-profit agencies, marketing, and team building activities
• Members plan and implement philanthropy and volunteer activities in the community.
